Body Electric, 2006
Commissioned by Ontario Science Center, Ontario,
Canada
Body Electric is a whimsical and educational
art installation. When viewers touch the electronic textile sensors,
panels illuminate text that describes the electrical nature of the
human body.
The fuzzy letters are made of yarn twisted with
fine metal fibers that are charged with a small, harmless amount
of electricity. And your body's a big bag of electrically conductive
salt water. Touching the tufts allows the electrical charge to flow
from the yarn, through your body, to ground. Sensors detect this
change in charge and send an electrical signal to brighten and dim
the lights.
Media: Hand-made conductive sensors, conductive yarns, conductive
tape, felt, acrylic, wood, incandescent light, lighting control
circuitry. Four textile sensor areas. 48"w x 48"h.
